Salt Lake City Reader Wins Lucky Cow Contest

Kansas City, MO  (10/28/2005)  Congratulations to Susan Birch, a Deseret Morning News reader from Salt Lake City, and winner of the comic strip Lucky Cow’s “funniest fast-food story” competition.

Andrews McMeel Publishing, in conjunction with Lucky Cow creator Mark Pett, ran a contest in the fall of 2005 to find out who had the funniest fast food story. Birch was the one who tickled Pett’s funny bone the most.

Birch and her husband went to a local fried chicken restaurant to pick up no less than three buckets of fried chicken for their extended family, including their grandkids. Although the only people in the restaurant, they were still asked, “Is this for here or to go?”, a story that keeps them laughing to this day.

Birch’s story will be immortalized on Nov. 11, 2005, when it will appear as a Lucky Cow comic strip. She will also receive the signed original of ‘her’ cartoon plus a personalized copy of Mark Pett’s Lucky Cow: A Cartoon Collection (Andrews McMeel Publishing, $10.95, Spring 2005).

Lucky Cow is syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate. Pett’s varied and worldly experiences include teaching English and “skewering Czech political figures” as an editorial cartoonist in Prague; teaching sixth grade in rural Mississippi (a stint that inspired his Mr. Lowe strip) and working as a freelance cartoonist. He now lives in the Mississippi Delta with his wife and two dogs.
