Kansas City, MO (06/07/2006) Pooch Café Marking New Territory
Poncho, the star and gang leader in the comic strip, Pooch Café, and his pack of running buddies, are doing what they can to promote regular visits to the vet and other professional pet care services through a series of postcards aimed at pet owners.
“You wouldn’t let your dog cut your hair would you? Go to a professional,” one postcard reads, picturing Poncho giving his human mistress a bad haircut.
Pet owners across the country will be receiving these postcards soon from their neighborhood groomers and veterinarians, promoting regular visits to the vet and other professional pet care services. More than a dozen of the Pooch Café postcards are in development and more are expected next year.
The licensing division of Universal Press Syndicate, Pooch Café’s syndicate, has teamed up with Sharper Cards, a prominent communications product company that supports business and healthcare professionals in attracting and keeping clients and patients. This licensing agreement will bring Pooch Café’s wit and humor to veterinary and pet care reminder postcards, greeting cards, calendars and more.
Pooch Café joins other Universal Press Syndicate features already in the Sharper Cards’ product line of reminder postcards. Adam@Home and Heart of the City characters promote dental appointments, while For Better or For Worse and Garfield postcards promote pet care and appointments in general.
In only 18 months, Pooch Café has gained a syndication list that includes more than 200 newspapers worldwide. It is one of the fastest growing strips Universal Press syndicates.
No ordinary cat and dog comic strip, Pooch Café, created by Paul Gilligan, follows the adventures of mutt Poncho who frequents a café to discuss all the intricacies of a dog’s life. The strip examines the psychology and philosophy of the mysterious canine mind, taking on weighty issues such as toilet breath or break-dancing. Pooch Café has been an international hit with comic fans, judging from Gilligan’s bone drawer full of fan mail and unprecedented reader demand.
Pooch Café has been collected in the books, “All Dogs Naturally Know How to Swim” (2003) and “No Collar, No Service” (2005) by Andrews McMeel Publishing.
Paul Gilligan lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
