Los Angeles, CA (06/29/2006) The Cartoon Network’s animated series, The Boondocks, has been nominated for a 2006 Teen Choice Award in the category of “Choice TV Show: Animated.” The series is based on Aaron McGruder’s comic strip, The Boondocks, syndicated by Universal Press. McGruder serves as creator and executive producer of the show.
Other nominees in the category include: American Dad, Family Guy, King of the Hill, South Park and The Simpsons. Winners for the Teen Choice Awards will be announced on a live telecast which will air at 8 p.m., Sunday, August 20 on Fox.
The Boondocks chronicles the lives of a group of African-American city kids adjusting to life in white suburbia.
Regina King (Miss Congeniality 2, Ray) and John Witherspoon (Friday After Next) are among the actors who lend their voice talent on the animated television comedy. King does double duty as the voices of brothers, Huey and Riley Freeman--the two characters central to the strip and series--while Witherspoon will be voicing Granddad, the boys’ cantankerous grandfather. Hip-hop artist turned actor Mos Def, Ed Asner and Charlie Murphy (Chappelle’s Show) are among the eclectic mix of actors who have voiced guest characters on the show.
“There's certainly a lot more going on than white kids channeling hip-hop stars, easily lampoonable suburban white behavior or even the clash of old and young,” writes Tim Goodman of The San Francisco Chronicle, "Boondocks has heart (helped immeasurably in the Cartoon Network series by Regina King voicing both brothers), and it has something to say about family, brotherly love and overcoming the inanities of everyday life.” Goodman goes on to say, “It is funny, fearless and continues the vibe of the strip.”
The animated series has also been popular among animation enthusiasts. Karl Olson of ToonZone.com writes, “The animation is outstanding. . . McGruder's manga-like style translates to the screen well with high detail and a limited range of mouth movements, but with a fluidity that is rare in anime and even rarer on Adult Swim.”
2006 promises to be quite a year for McGruder and his strip. The Boondocks is also up for three Emmys - including Outstanding Animated Program.
The Boondocks can be seen on Adult Swim, the Cartoon Network’s late-night block of animation for adults. The first season is now available on DVD.
