Cartoon Doodle Brings Big Bucks for Charity

New York  (01/24/2008)  A New York fund-raising effort to feed the needy was given a boost by “Preteena” cartoonist Allison Barrows. Her color doodle of PreTeena characters Teena, Stick, and Jeri, was bought at auction for $1,000 (opening bids were $350).

The "Doodle for Hunger" Celebrity Art Auction, based in Midtown Manhattan, is an event of the Capuchin Food Pantries, which feeds, clothes, and counsels the poor (see details at www.doodleforhunger.com ). Actors, sports figures, musicians and professional cartoonists donate a cartoon to be auctioned, with the proceeds going to Capuchin Food Pantries in New York.

This year, at the 8th annual event presented by Bob and Michelle Wallach and held at the Tavern on the Green in New York City on Oct. 25, Montel Williams was guest of honor, and Marc Brown ("Arthur"), was Artist of the Year. The event was hosted by news anchor Ernie Anastos and the celebrity auctioneer was actor Tony Lo Bianco.

This year's event garnered over $400,000 for the charity. This is the first year PreTeena's creator participated in the event.

"Both my children went to Catholic school - St. Joseph's - and we have been active through the church with the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which collects food and necessities for people in need. I am honored to have been asked to participate in this remarkable event. People always talk about making a difference: Doodle for Hunger puts art and artists to work to make that difference," said Barrows.
