Roots and Wings, Love and Discipline

Tom McMahon is internationally known for his collection of practical parenting tips. CNN has called him the “parenting tipster,” and The Orange County Register has described him as “a cross between Hints from Heloise and child-rearing guru T. Berry Brazelton.” A counselor and psychology professor at Ohlone College in Fremont, Calif., for more than 20 years, Tom has written his weekly Kid Tips column for the Portland Oregonian since 1992. His child-care tips have been featured in more than 150 newspapers and numerous magazines.

He is the author of three books, including “Kid Tips: Proven Child-Care Tips From Experienced Parents Across the Country” (Pocket Books, 1993, now in its fifth printing); “Orient: Hero Dog Guide of the Appalachian Trail” (WRS Publishing, 1995); and “Teen Tips: A Practical Survival Guide for Parents with Kids 11 to 19” (Pocket Books, 1996, now in its sixth printing). His book “Kid Tips” has also been published in Europe, Scandinavia and South America.

Tom has also appeared on more than 140 television and radio shows. “The Oprah Winfrey Show” has featured his parenting advice twice, including a 30-minute segment that propelled his book “Kid Tips” to No. 8 on one national book chart and No. 12 on another (out of 5 million titles). He has also appeared on CNN twice, and his family joined him on a segment of “Good Morning America,” which was taped from their home.

Tom was the national spokesperson for General Motors’ teen driver education program, a workshop presenter for Toyota, and a consultant to the writers of NBC’s adolescent programming. Soon after his “Teen Tips” book was published, the National Middle School Association proclaimed that “All parents with teens should read this book.”

McMahon grew up in San Diego, Calif., and now resides in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife, Nancy, and daughters, Amber and Kelly.
